The previous old fashioned plug i had used a small ring to remove it. This broke eventually because the plastic circle that held the ring broke. Using the plug without an easy way to remove it was a struggle. In contrast with the sturdy handle & graduated rings, this plug stays in place & is easy to remove. I think because of ease of use this product is worth the extra money. The cheaper plugs have to be replaced periodically and are more annoying to use.
