Takes me about 2 minutes to get it in right each time which isn't super convenient, but not a deal breaker.

There was no way it could stay in the hole below the damper, so you have to open the damper and stick it up in there sideways and then reach up into that sooty mess on the opposite side of the damper to pull that side down and into place and get it shaped around the pipe to where it sits in there without any ripples. I was really hoping this was going to be a much easier task. I've fussed with this thing for far too long and still don't have a good air tight seal. So yeah, pretty much a waste of money.

We have since bought one together with an extension rod. My chimney is now safely and inexpensively blocked and draught-free, no tools needed, job done. The 'Sheep' can just as easily be removed if the chimney needs to be opened for any reason. We get the occasional small bird dropping in to see us and the thought of them dying of starvation in that dark sooty place is worrying - but not now - problem sorted. The Chimney Sheep itself is a disk of compressed wool with soft edges and a firmly attached rod/handle that is simply pushed up into the chimney forming a tight fit. Measurements are important so be sure to measure accurately and follow manufacturers guidelines. I am very happy to recommend this simple, cost-friendly effective device - in fact, I have just ordered another one for the kitchen chimney. Update on my above review My second 'Sheep' has arrived - immediately installed in our unused kitchen chimney - no mess - no fuss - very little effort - no more draft. What's not to like.

We have since bought one together with an extension rod. My chimney is now safely and inexpensively blocked and draught-free, no tools needed, job done. The 'Sheep' can just as easily be removed if the chimney needs to be opened for any reason. We get the occasional small bird dropping in to see us and the thought of them dying of starvation in that dark sooty place is worrying - but not now - problem sorted. The Chimney Sheep itself is a disk of compressed wool with soft edges and a firmly attached rod/handle that is simply pushed up into the chimney forming a tight fit. Measurements are important so be sure to measure accurately and follow manufacturers guidelines. I am very happy to recommend this simple, cost-friendly effective device - in fact, I have just ordered another one for the kitchen chimney. The fabric circle is really a super-heavy-duty, all natural, woven sort of felt from, they claim, special sheep with really dense wool. I can't speak to that but I'll admit that I've never seen anything quite like it. Despite its thickness and solidity, though, it was not terribly difficult to trim up with heavy shears. Note: DO NOT attempt to make an exact fit! You want it to be a little big, so it'll squish into the flue and stay there from friction. I also had to cut a perpendicular slit to allow the damper control rod to pass through. This, too, was no big deal. And the result? Not only did all chimney drafts immediately cease, but the family noted a great improvement in allergies! Maybe pollen was blowing down the chimney along with the cold air? Or maybe they're allergic to whatever soot or ash the draft carried with it? Whatever - the cost of this gadget will pay for itself with a few less bottles of allergy meds, to say nothing of the cost of however much heat was vanishing up the flue. You do have to be a bit handy, detail-oriented, and flexible to crawl around upside down in your fireplace. Obviously make sure the fire is long out, and the fireplace is as clean as you can reasonably get it first. You're still going to get a bit dirty but it shouldn't be Dickensian. The results will be worth it.

The chimney had a chimney cap damper that could be closed but it was damaged last year by a falling branch during a storm and the way the chimney was repaired no longer allowed for a closing cap. So I noticed that the room was much colder than usual even though I had good fireplace doors. The problem was when the furnace kicked on the system would pull cold air into the room through the fireplace doors. The room is now a good 10 degrees warmer in the morning when it's below freezing outside. The flue damper works better than the chimney cap one did. I got the 10 inch round version which fit properly for the purpose but I didn't measure. Just eyeballed the size and found out that having it a little larger than the chimney pipe's hole worked well. The only issue I had was the rod provided is only one foot long so I had to reach up into the chimney to stuff the damper in place. I did have to reach up with a stick to make sure the coverage inside the chimney pipe was smooth without bunching. I didn't need to trim the wool material. The remedy for the short rod was buying a couple of extensions that are also available on Amazon to double the length.

Content: The concept here is simple enough - open the damper and stuff this nice insulated wool to stop the cold winter drafts. The sheep wool feels like great quality and it actually does make a significant difference in reducing the draft, but man $45 for some insulation on a stick is a tough pill to swallow. Unfortunately I couldn't find any alternative that looked comparable in the construction, so I suppose you get what you pay for, and in the grand scheme of things this lets me save money from my heating bill on a monthly basis so it probably pays for itself. Still though I feel like I had to do some mental gymnastics to justify the purchase.

Takes me about 2 minutes to get it in right each time which isn't super convenient, but not a deal breaker.

There was no way it could stay in the hole below the damper, so you have to open the damper and stick it up in there sideways and then reach up into that sooty mess on the opposite side of the damper to pull that side down and into place and get it shaped around the pipe to where it sits in there without any ripples. I was really hoping this was going to be a much easier task. I've fussed with this thing for far too long and still don't have a good air tight seal. So yeah, pretty much a waste of money.

We have since bought one together with an extension rod. My chimney is now safely and inexpensively blocked and draught-free, no tools needed, job done. The 'Sheep' can just as easily be removed if the chimney needs to be opened for any reason. We get the occasional small bird dropping in to see us and the thought of them dying of starvation in that dark sooty place is worrying - but not now - problem sorted. The Chimney Sheep itself is a disk of compressed wool with soft edges and a firmly attached rod/handle that is simply pushed up into the chimney forming a tight fit. Measurements are important so be sure to measure accurately and follow manufacturers guidelines. I am very happy to recommend this simple, cost-friendly effective device - in fact, I have just ordered another one for the kitchen chimney. Update on my above review My second 'Sheep' has arrived - immediately installed in our unused kitchen chimney - no mess - no fuss - very little effort - no more draft. What's not to like.
