No way is this pillow intended for a 3-8 year old. The back of the pillow (the face) is smaller then even your average throw pillow for a couch, but a little bit thicker. The fabric is soft and overall very cuddly but because of the $35 price tag I expected so much more. Because they were both "Santa gifts," I didn't have the time or energy to return them, otherwise I probably would have.
