Content: We bought this to replace our old pilot light and ignite that was not functioning when we moved in to our new house. It worked very well and was fairly easy to install. It has lasted us 2 winters and we have had no issues with it. It lit on the first try after having the gas shut off to the fireplace all spring and summer.

Content: I have an old fireplace with an ITT General Controls valve that was leaking gas. I've been told that the grease in the valves, exposed to heat, over time disappears. The fireplace pan had been installed backwards, with the gas pipe entering on the left and the valve on the left. I was happy to find the Peterson kit. It was not hard to make it work. The Peterson valve is symmetrical, so it can be mounted on the left of a fireplace pan and it's low profile, which keeps it away from the heat. I had to move the pilot light from the right to the left of the pan and cut threads in a pipe nipple to reinstall the old nozzle. It's working great. And one thing I really like about this valve is that the actual safety valve in it is a replaceable part.

Content: I knew there was a gas insert in our fireplace, but gas is not something you'd want to leave unchecked. This valve and pilot light has enough safety features that I am comfortable having it take care of our fireplace. There are good installation videos online by the manufacturer and the instructions it came with were fine as well. We've been using it for a few months now (our ceramic logs arrived much later). I am used to the controls and the pilot light is dialed in just right. Bending the leads and pipes is a bit tricky at first, but once you figure out where things go, it's pretty straight forward. It's also important to always use thread sealant on gas fittings are the manufacturer recommends. I bought all other parts together, just the valve I got from here and they all fit together easily. There are remote and electric controls as well, but, to be honest, this valve is easy to use so I can't justify the price for the remote control ones. Definitely would recommend it and I'd buy it again.
Title: costly, defective item... out hundreds of $$'s
Content: I had to wait nearly 2 wks to get someone to come out to install this item in my gas fireplace. It worked less than 1 hr after installation, then quit. I had to wait another 2 wks for installer to get back out to troubleshoot, only to tell me the item is defective. That's $200 for service calls and $200 for the defective item but still no working fireplace. Unfortunately I cannot return it by the deadline of tomorrow since I'd need to pay a 3rd $100 service call fee for them to remove the defective item so that I CAN return it, which I'm unwilling to do - not that they could come back tomorrow anyhow. I'm EXTREMELY upset with this experience and product!

Content: Here is the story. We had a natural gas log system installed in our wood burning fireplace when we bought our house in 1998. We never burnt wood since we like the cleanliness of gas. The first Peterson valve lasted 18 years. After 18 years it needed to be replaced so I did it myself. Very easy, unfasten the old one, put in the new valve. The second valve lasted 4 years before the on/off knob froze up. I then installed a new valve. The third valve lasted 2 weeks before the on/off knob froze up. Sent this one back to Peterson for a refund and bought a new valve from them. After installing the new valve, I lit the pilot light. The pilot stayed lit for about three minutes and then went out. I could not get the pilot to relight. After many tries over a period of 5 days, I give up on this one. Since it is still within the return time I guess that I will try a 5th valve. I am only staying with the same valve due the ease of installation sine the hook ups are identical. As an edit to this review I did not need to return the valve again. Just before disassembling the valve to send back I gave it one more try after moving the pilot gas hose a little. This time the pilot lit. It has now been lit for two day, I hope that the problem has been resolved.
