I needed it to be around 39.5", which is too short to use all 3 sections of the rod, but too long to safely use with only 2 sections; it requires the tension rod to be almost fully extended, and makes the whole thing very wobbly regardless of how tight you set it. Luckily, I had another rod on hand being used elsewhere in the house that I was able to switch it out for, and was able to make it work without returning and buying another one. So it ended up working out for me (kind of), but I wouldn't recommend buying this unless you're using it at lengths around 28"-34", or 40"-45". The ~35"-39" range is really a stretch for this rod, it's pretty unsafe, and it's not something I think they should be advertising as usable at these lengths.
